Day 8 – Unseen Obedience: Embracing God in the Everyday
Genesis 5:21-24
When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah.22 After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch lived in close fellowship with God for another 300 years, and he had other sons and daughters. Enoch lived 365 years, walking in close fellowship with God. Then one day he disappeared, because God took him
Obedience is not always in the big moments. Sometimes, it shows up in the small, quiet decisions made in the ordinary rhythms of a daily life with Jesus. Of course, there are stories of radical faith and obedience scattered all throughout the Bible – Noah, Moses, Mary, and of course, Jesus’ ultimate obedience leading him to the cross. These life-altering stories, however, are usually few and far between. So, what about for the rest of us, in the daily walk of obedience that no one else sees?
Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:3-4 that God honours what we do in secret – the quiet, unseen moments of faithfulness. These are the moments when we choose to say “yes” to Him, even when no one is watching, even when the world is unaware. And this is especially true in the deep valleys of life, when it feels like every ounce of strength and faith is required just to stay close to Jesus. It’s in these seasons that obedience is often the hardest, yet the most precious.
Many years ago, my family and I walked through one of these seasons. It was a long, painful season in the valley, and I truly did not know when it would end. It was in this place that I learned what it truly meant to say "yes" to Jesus in the moments that no one else saw. In the secret moments, each day, to allow him to take me by the hand and lead me through; to take up my cross of daily obedience, even when my own understanding could not fathom where we were going. It took every piece of little obedience that I was capable of, and my faith was truly no more than a mustard seed.
And I can promise you, these quiet moments of faithfulness are sincerely, very precious to God. One intriguing example of this in the Bible is the story of Enoch. Enoch is only one of two individuals in Scripture who didn’t experience death, but was taken directly into heaven by God, leaving behind only a brief account of his life. He appears in Genesis, and just as soon as he steps onto the scene, he enters heaven. While his story might seem simple compared to the dramatic tales of other biblical figures, it speaks volumes about the quiet power of daily obedience and faith. Enoch’s legacy is not defined by monumental deeds, but by his everyday obedience, his continual “yes” to God, and his 300 years of walking intimately with his Creator.
In a world that often values flashy accomplishments, Enoch's steadfast, faithful walk reminds us that sometimes, faithfulness is the most extraordinary thing of all.
